The Hays County Child Protective Board has selected Topaz Lurwick as this year's recipient of the Anna Ve Farr Heroes in Education award!
Topaz is an educator at Wimberley High School in Wimberley, TX under Principal Ryan Wilkes.
Like Anna, Topaz has a loving heart and a deep compassion for abused, neglected, under-resourced and special needs children. Her efforts are not focused to one aspect of her work, but rather in all areas of awareness, connection, education, and support.
Topaz has taken the initiative to make connections in her community so that collaborations can swiftly impact children and their families. She is an advocate and a refuge for many. Topaz is most definitely a HERO IN EDUCATION!

Paul and Brittany are the true definition of foster parents who want what is best for a child in foster care. Their work started back in March 2018 when they took on a specialized level of care for a 3 month old baby girl. The challenges in this case have been hard, but they have never once considered giving up on this special little girl. Paul and Brittany are simply the true definition of amazing and noble foster parents!

The San Marcos Unitarian Universalist Fellowship’s Quilting Guild has donated 21 child-sized quilts to the HCCPB’s Remme Rainbow Room. SMUUF Social Justice Chair Jeannie Lewis presented the quilts to Board member June Chase Hankins, who expressed the Board’s appreciation: “Children arriving in the care of Child Protective Services have left the only homes they have ever known, often with no possessions other than the clothes they are wearing. Each quilt will be a warming, comforting item that belongs to the child alone. The Board is grateful, and I am touched by the Guild members’ devotion of their time and skill to comfort children in this way.”
In addition, SMUUF chose the Board for its June 2022 Donate-the-Plate contribution, donating $435. HCCPB appreciates the support received over the last several years from SMUUF, which has helped to fill the many gaps between what the state provides for children in the care of Child Protective Services, and what is needed to meet their basic needs.
